The Breast Cancer Society of Canada, (BCSC) is a registered, national non-profit charity dedicated to saving lives through breast cancer research. We raise money to fund patient-focused research for the diagnosis, treatment and prevention of breast cancer.
The Breast Cancer Society of Canada was established in 1991 by Lawrence and Kay Greenaway, in memory of their daughter Pam who died of breast cancer at 38 years old. They positively transformed their deep loss into a mission to raise money to fund research to cure this devastating disease.
BCSC receives no government funding – all of our research is funded through the generosity of our donors.
The first Mother’s Day Walk was held on Sunday, May 12th 1991. That day, Pam walked alongside her family and friends to raise funds for breast cancer research. They raised $2,000 that year! Sadly, Pam passed away the following March, making that first Mother’s Day walk the only event she would attend. Determined more than ever by their passion to end this disease, her family and friends have continued to devote themselves to her legacy.
Cleo, a ladies’ retail store is a long-time partner of the Breast Cancer Society of Canada supporting the Mother’s Day Walk and breast cancer research since 2001. We are extremely grateful for the generous support of the Cleo staff and their customers.
GenWin is a fundraising platform that provides interactive campaigns with gamified digital experiences. BCSC partnered with GenWin and worked closely with their creative team to develop the One Billion Steps Challenge – offering our supporters a new and fun way to participate in our Virtual Mother’s Day Walk, powered by Cleo.
